My favorite time of the year is when it starts heating up and the sun shines. It’s a great reason to spend time in nature and engage in more activity. Summertime also means more traveling, social activities, events, and summer programs which means our health is taking a backseat when it gets busy. You still have to remember to take a breath and focus on YOU. Here are some ways to prioritize your health this summer.

Stay Hydrated

With the hotter weather, it’s important to stay hydrated. Especially when engaging in activities outside, you should always have a water bottle with you. Plan to sip water all day long and drink it especially before, during, and after your workout. While electrolyte drinks can be refreshing, they can also provide large amounts of added sugars and should be limited. The best way to replenish electrolytes and fluids is with water, other low-calorie beverages (10 calories or less per serving), and balanced meals/snacks.

Eat Well and Try New Recipes

Whether we’re grilling or eating out more, we want to make sure we’re still providing our bodies with essential nutrients so don’t forget about your fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. Fruits are a great way to give you something cold, sweet, and juicy during these warmer months. Fresh produce in season can give you different ideas for new recipes. While I love all the classics, it’s nice to try new ones or go back to an oldie. One of my favorite summer dishes is Pasta Primavera – a great way to get rid of any leftover vegetables and is light and fresh with herbs, olive oil, lemon, and parmesan cheese. I use protein pasta to provide more protein and balance!

Get Outside

The warmer weather is a great reason to get outside if you’re able. Watch out for air quality alerts and higher temperatures which may be better for some to stay inside. This summer, I’ve been intentional about getting in at least 10 minutes/day of intentional movement. Even on days when I would normally not workout, I am doing yoga to help with stress and recovery. How many different activities can you fit in those 30 days? Hike? Bike? Basketball? Tennis? Dance? Yoga? HIIT class? Get moving!

Practice Mindfulness

Speaking of yoga, we must find time for stillness and breath during these busy times. Get away from the screens and take some time for reflection. It helps promote mindfulness – which just means being aware of your mind, body, and feelings without judgment. What are we feeling? Where are we feeling it? And what areas do we need to promote more balance?

We can be mindful by:

  • Ensuring we’re eating multiple, nutritious meals throughout the day
  • Sipping on water
  • Getting adequate sleep
  • Decreasing screens and getting outside
  • Taking time for your needs

Find time for YOU

And most importantly, make sure we’re finding time for ourselves this summer with all the activities – read a book, watch a new series, start your yoga journey – click here for more information, whatever you need to keep your energy going this summer.
